An exceptional Victorian mourning locket dating to c1880, handcrafted in 18ct gold and glossy black Onyx. The front is centred with an applied gold celestial starburst set with a single natural seed pearl, creating a beautiful point of light against the deep black background. The attention to detail is superb, even the reverse of the bale has been carefully enamelled in glossy black, a small touch that speaks volumes about the quality of its original craftsmanship.
Turn it over and the back is equally impressive, with a rich folate engraved gold work hinged compartment, with a blank space for engraving initials or gorgeous left as is, opening to reveal two windows for treasured photographs or keepsakes. From the crisp engraving to the enamel work and beautifully preserved interior, every surface has been considered. Surviving in exceptional condition, this is a very special example of Victorian sentimental jewellery. Simply stunning on & whilst we’re referring to the 'back and front', this piece is totally reversable.
