This ornate Victorian chain is a masterpiece of sentiment and design. Fancy interwoven links embossed with delicate applied cannetille work lead to a gemstone set acrostic clasp spelling ‘REGARD’ in Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, and Diamond.
The clasp is applied with highly ornate cannetille work and the gemstones are held in scalloped bezel settings, resembling stars.
The chain is handcrafted in 9ct yellow gold with the clasp in 18ct gold, such a rare piece with heartfelt meaning.

About Acrostic Jewellery:
Jean-Baptiste Mellerio (1765-1850), jewellery designer to Marie Antoinette and the French court, is credited with inventing acrostic jewellery.
Poetically called the “language of gemstones,” acrostic jewellery reportedly enchanted Napoleon Bonaparte, who commissioned several pieces for family members.
Acrostic jewellery gained popularity in Georgian England during the 1820s and 1830s and was in vogue throughout much of the Victorian era (1837-1901). “REGARD” and “DEAREST,” two terms of endearment, were favourites given to spouses, family members, and lovers. Gems were also used to spell birthdays and private messages.

MARKS: Applied 9ct to first link of chain, none to clasp tested as 18ct (slightly higher)

CONDITION: In excellent Antique condition, all gemstones are secure and unabraded, cannetille work shows no losses, no thinning to links, push-in tongue clasp opens and closes without issue
