A joyful explosion of colour and charm, this rare antique c1900 Harlequin necklace captures the wonderfully playful spirit of the era. A cascade of mixed gemstones, including Topaz, Spinel, Garnet, Amethyst, Quartz and sparkling Paste, all dancing along the neckline in an irresistible palette. Every stone catches the light differently, giving the piece beautiful movement and personality when worn.
Suspended from its original 9ct gold chain with push barrel closure, the gems are claw set and run in a double fringe style line, this necklace has all the whimsy and romance collectors search for in true antique Harlequin jewellery. Increasingly difficult to find untouched and complete, it feels both delicate and striking at once, the kind of piece that instantly becomes the talking point of a jewellery collection.

*Harlequin jewellery inspired by the Commedia dell ‘Arte is a historic and highly colourful style, originating from the 16th-century Italian theatrical character, Arlecchino (Harlequin). Characterised by his patchwork costume, the character’s Diamond-shaped pattern and vibrant colour combinations, such as red, green, yellow, and blue, these were directly translated into multi-gemstone jewellery. Georgian, Victorian & Edwardian-era pieces often feature a series of differently coloured gemstones in a single, fluid piece, sometimes known as "Harlequinades".
