A joyful celebration of colourful gemstones and Edwardian craftsmanship, this rare antique Harlequin necklace is a true feast for the eyes. A graduating line of mixed natural gemstones: green Garnet, rich red Garnets, vibrant Spinel, Citrine, soft lilac Amethyst, pale Aquamarine and two shimmering paste, all work together to create a beautifully balanced spectrum, each stone individually claw set to allow light to pass freely through the open-backed settings. The result is a piece that dances with colour, every movement revealing a new combination of tones and brilliance.
Handcrafted in 9ct yellow gold and finished with its original S-hook clasp, this square cable-link chain style necklace remains entirely untouched, no repairs, just beautifully preserved condition. The gentle graduation of the stones gives it an elegant drape along the neckline, while the mix of gems adds that unmistakable Edwardian charm and individuality. It’s refined, and graceful piece that feels as fresh today as it did when first made.
*Harlequin jewellery inspired by the Commedia dell'Arte is a historic and highly colourful style, originating from the 16th-century Italian theatrical character, Arlecchino (Harlequin). Characterised by his patchwork costume, the character’s diamond-shaped pattern and vibrant colour combinations, such as red, green, yellow, and blue, these were directly translated into multi-gemstone jewellery. Georgian, Victorian & Edwardian-era pieces often feature a series of differently coloured gemstones in a single, fluid piece, sometimes known as "Harlequinades".
