The design features a distinctive cross pattée form richly decorated with fine hand-engraved scrollwork, symbolising faith and devotion. The locket opens to reveal a hidden compartment — once used to hold a cherished photograph or memento — making it both a piece of art and a vessel for memory. The cross pattée (also sometimes described as a Maltese or Gothic cross in Victorian jewellery catalogues) features broad, flaring arms with concave edges, and ornate hand-engraved scrollwork, typical of high-Victorian design motifs, you can see the acanthus-like flourishes and fine engraving lines done by hand. The central monogram ('AR') is in intertwined script.
During the Victorian period, cross pendants were among the most sentimental of jewellery forms.
While some were overtly devotional, many — like this one — were worn as fashionable personal ornaments or love tokens often with secret compartments for personal mementos.
